Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi are the torch bearers of the hoary Lalgudi tradition. It is an onerous responsibility to maintain the qualitative quotient of this matchless style, and it is to the siblings’ credit that they have emerged with flying colors. Their illustrious father and guru Padmabhushan Lalgudi G. Jayaraman has honed shaped and moulded the duo’s innate musical talent to such perfection that this duo is regarded as top rankers among contemporary violinists.
Both Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi with determination, discipline and dedication have hardly ever sacrificed the classical values of South Indian music at the altar of mere showmanship. Both made their debut when they were thirteen and have never looked back. The violin trio concerts of Lalgudi Jayaraman, Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi radiated a melodic, musical energy that electrified both the audience and the ambience. Their duets all over the world have won the hearts of Music lovers. Both of them have accompanied several senior vidwans Krishnan’s jugalbandi programmes with leading Hindustani musicians have been widely appreciated. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi is also an accomplished Vocalist. She has lent her voice to Dance performances and recently to a movie “Sringaram’ the music for which was scored by her legendary father.She was awarded the title ‘Tantri Nada Mani” by His Holiness Jayendra Swamigal at Kanchipuram and the Award for Excellence from Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation.
Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi are cultural ambassadors par excellence who relentlessly strive to create more global awareness and appreciation for the singular idiom of classical Carnatic music. Some of the important centers where they have performed in the past worth mention , would be Tropical Institute Amsterdam, Concertgebouw – Amsterdam , Lincoln Center NewYork , Smithsonian Institute Washington , Purcell Room , London .
If Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi, despite brilliant academic qualifications have opted to pursue an artistic career, it is because of their deep passion for the art and a searing will to reinforce the precious legacy that this duo has been fortunate to inherit.
